Kuruluthuda rice (Oryza sativa) is a delicious and nutritious red rice variety named after a word that means "bird's beak." Kuruluthuda is a unique type of rice originating from Sri Lanka. It's recommended to soak the rice in water for about half an hour before cooking. The rice is usually boiled with pandan leaves and salt before consumption. It's a staple in many Sri Lankan recipes such as steamed Kuruluthuda with cardamom, Kuruluthuda cooked in garlic oil and aromatic red onion, or curry leaf-tempered rice with five spices. Moist rice may also be pounded into flour at home using a mortar and pestle. Rice flour is used in a variety of various sweet and savory Sri Lankan cuisines.

Kuruluthuda is rich in proteins and fiber which helps to improve bladder functioning. It has been shown to have a 25% to 30% lower Glycemic Index (GI) than other common rice cultivars. This is a good source of magnesium which is essential for muscle contraction. And it is full of B vitamins which are vital for the production of energy. Helps to enhance male sexual potency and helps evade impotency. This rice variety is supposed to provide comparatively high energy.

This rice is also utilized to treat skin issues. To treat boils, sores, swellings, and skin imperfections, boiled and cooled rice is mashed and turned into a paste or formed into balls. Rice extracts, such as starch and oil, are used in a variety of cosmetic and hygiene products and are thought to have moisturizing and nourishing properties for the hair and skin.

As with most of the other traditional rice variants, Kuruluthuda also should be stored in a dry place in a closed container for long-term use. Kuruluthuda, especially, because cultivated organically with no pesticides, might get easily attracted by rice weevil if not properly stored and used.
